Conference Success
at Creative Industries Precinct
The Australian Congress of New Urbanism was held at the Creative Industries Precinct at Kelvin Grove from 3 – 9 February 08.
The Congress used a number of the spaces within the Precinct including the block for the trade show, the glasshouse for the secretariat room, and the parade ground for the catering and networking area for the 400 delegates.
The conference highlighted how easily each of these separate spaces link together to create a flow for the various conference events.

Pit Works
Gardens Theatre gets a new Orchestra Pit
Gardens Theatre has been undergoing major reconstruction since December as part of the upgrade of its orchestra pit. Once work is completed in March/April, the Theatre will be able to provide more flexible staging and seating options for hirers.
The new pit creates the possibility of increasing seating capacity by up to 80 in certain configurations. It will also allow a variety of staging configurations that were previously impossible, including steps and a more intimate performance setting.
The pit will comfortably hold up to a 35 piece orchestra, making Gardens Theatre ideal for musicals. Mt Gravatt High School will be testing the capacity of the pit in July for their Back to the 80s Musical event.

QUT venues featured in new movie
Fool's Gold, the new romantic comedy adventure starring Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson opened last week. In January 2007, the entire crew were at QUT Gardens Point campus for 3 weeks, where parts of the movie were filmed.
In the photo above, Kate and Matthew are outside the historic "U" block in a brief scene.
A longer scene was filmed at Old Government House, which was transformed into a Maritime Museum, complete with signage and fake palm trees

After the movie was filmed, Old Government House closed for restoration and will reopen as an exciting new venue in just over a year.
If you go and see Fool's Gold, look out for our venues!
