Old Government House
Bringing History Back to Life
The extensive restoration currently underway at Old Government House, is due for completion in March 2009 in time for Queensland's 150th Year Celebrations.
One of the aims of the work is to restore this beautiful old building to its original grandeur so future generations can attend memorable events on this historic site, just as people did in Colonial times.
Four hundred guests attended the first function held at Old Government House in June 1862.
Queensland’s first Governor, Sir George Bowen, expressed his great pleasure at “being able to receive his guests in this excellent and commodious house”.
The House immediately became an important social focus for the new colony’s citizens in providing a venue for vice-regal balls, receptions, dinners, garden parties, soirees and a variety of other official functions.

QUT Gardens Theatre
 Situated in the heart of Brisbane’s CBD, cradled by the City Botanic Gardens and Brisbane River, QUT Gardens Theatre is a state of the art, modern, performing arts venue, offering exceptional front of house, auditorium and backstage facilities, including a performance studio with sprung floor. It has the latest audiovisual and technical equipment and a foyer with panoramic views of the Botanic Gardens.
It is the perfect venue for your next presentation, launch or conference.
After months of major reconstruction, the Theatre now boasts a new orchestra pit which provides more flexible staging and seating plans.
In certain configurations, the new pit can increase the Theatre’s seating capacity to 480 – 80 more than standard. It will also allow a variety of staging configurations that were previously impossible, including steps and a more intimate performance setting.
The pit will comfortably hold up to a 35 piece orchestra, making QUT Gardens Theatre an easy choice for musical productions and performances.
